READING

The most critical skill students learn in school is that of learning to read.  The ability to read (literacy) affects all areas of one’s life.  It will help determine success in school as well as selection and success in chosen careers.  So the ability to read at expected levels of achievement is a critical life skill.  Schools devote a great deal of time helping students achieve this skill.  They work with students on phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and various comprehension skills, all of which are important for students to become good readers.  However, if students don’t use these skills—in short, read—they will not improve upon them.  It is much like a boy or girl who wants to become a basketball player.  He/she can get the best coach to teach the skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting; but if the child does not use the skills and play the game, he/she will not become a skilled basketball player.  It is the same with reading:  teachers can teach the skill; but unless students read, they will not become readers.
