FROM THE LIBRARY…

The library is presenting a special challenge to first graders. We’ve noticed that many students are choosing books that are often written for older readers.  We are now going to challenge all first graders to check out picture books and readers that are closer to their independent reading level.

During April and May, students will be invited to choose from 30+ famous picture books. Selections will include Caldecott Award Winners, readers, and student preference options.  Your child will bring home a flyer containing a “book cover” checklist. Mary, the library aide, will initial your child’s selection during check-out time. Prizes will be given to those that check-out every title, including the electives.

Please encourage your first grader to participate.  The list includes some beautiful, interesting, and challenging picture books recommended by educators from across the nation!

Sincerely,

Jane Cabaya; Librarian, Media Specialist

Mary Hansen; Library Aide

  1. This is a great idea! I wonder now if Lily will look for a book about the Moon (the topic she picked for her science project) or if she’ll find one on the list. It’s always interesting to see what they find when let free in the library!
